Biography:

Scholar-artist, museum curator, international lecturer, author and researcher, Steve Yates is the first Fulbright Scholar in the history of modern and contemporary photography to the USSR, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Belarus in 1991, and to Russia in 1995 and 2007. Resident artist of architectural site-specific, color photographic installations, most recently in Kaunas, Lithuania, his photographic work is part of permanent museum and private collections globally. Recipient of the U.S. Photographers Fellows hip as well as national and international research awards as curator of modern historical and contemporary exhibitions, he was founding Curator of Photography at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe from 1980-2007. Establishing
a collection of over ten thousand works with the museum’s first photography website (www.ideaphotographic). Author of multilingual publications with original interdisciplinary research and lecturer for symposiums and masterclasses conducted in cities throughout twenty-eight countries. Including the United States, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and Romania, to Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, Slovakia, United Kingdom, South Korea, Israel, Netherlands, Ukraine, Japan and Australia among others. Guest Curator for inter national exhibitions with Curatorial Assistance and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography. Studies with leading scholars include Masters and MFA doctoral degrees in photography and modern art history from the University of New Mexico. BFA degree in painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, the history of art and photography at the University of Nebraska.
About the residency:
Resident Scholar-Artist, site-specific photographic installation with published artist statement at Meno parkas galerija, and three lectures hosted by Lithuanian Photographers Association Kaunas Department, Gintaras Cesonis. The exhibition “Pagamintos būti fotografija” (”Constructed to be photographic”) installed with student collaborations in the new skylight gallery at Meno parkas galerija with Curator Arvydas Zalpys, Airida Rekštytė and staff. The exhibition included recent large color (112x152cm), digital photographic prints with drawing and painting.
