On Thursday, 8 October 2026, at 5:30 pm, the exhibition Double Exposure opens at the Kaunas Photography Gallery (Vilniaus g. 2, Kaunas). It presents the work of Nicolas Grospierre and Aneta Grzeszykowska in Lithuania for the first time. Though they belong to the same generation, the two artists understand photography in radically different ways, yet both reach down to its very foundations. The exhibition’s curator, Adam Mazur, and the artist Nicolas Grospierre will attend the opening.
Double exposure is a simple photographic trick that almost invariably produces something cognitively revealing and aesthetically intriguing. The exhibition by Nicolas Grospierre and Aneta Grzeszykowska is precisely such a composition: simple in origin, unpredictable in its consequences.
Double Exposure emerged from a conversation and an invitation to each artist to name a favourite work by the other. Grospierre selected Grzeszykowska’s series Selfie (2014), while Grzeszykowska chose Grospierre’s The Alder King(2022). The two series constitute a point of convergence, a place where the artists’ sensibilities permeate one another. Alongside them, the exhibition presents new series by both artists: Grospierre produces unique heliograms exposed over the course of months in a field near his home in the Suwałki region, while Grzeszykowska, reversing time, returns to adolescence and confronts her own memory of coming of age with her daughter Franciszka’s actual puberty.
The exhibition is not representative of Polish photography as a whole, but it offers an encounter with two of the most compelling and consequential personalities in the field, without whom it is difficult to imagine not only Polish photography but Polish art of the twenty-first century as well.
Nicolas Grospierre (b. 1975 in Geneva, lives and works in Warsaw) is a photographer and conceptual artist known for his research into modernist architecture. He studied political science at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) and at the London School of Economics (LSE). In 2008, he took part in the Venice Architecture Biennale in the Polish Pavilion with the project Hotel Polonia. His solo exhibitions have been held at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv, BWA Warsaw, the Architecture Association in London and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
Aneta Grzeszykowska (b. 1974) is an artist with a post-feminist and autobiographical practice. Her works are held in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Seattle Art Museum, the Rubell Museum in Miami, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art.
