Dutch serial photography book exhibition at Kaunas Photography Gallery

After a busy weekend of Kaunas Art Book Fair 2024, the gallery will host an exhibition of Dutch serial photography publications curated by BOOKS at, a bookstore based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, for the next few weeks. The exhibition is complemented by Joris Ivens’ 30-minute documentary film “The New Land” (1933).

The 14 publications on show include the names of famous Dutch artists such as Gers Dekkers, Besson, Jan Dibbets and Hans Eijkelboom, who have used the techniques of serial photography to convey the distinctive Dutch landscape. The authors have interestingly translated the serial nature of their photographs into publications by publishing a series of loose-leaf books in folders and envelopes.

The exhibition is part of “BOOKS at” owner Matt’s personal research in the de Appel archive in Amsterdam. According to the curator, “Spanning fifty-plus years, this small collection born from a budding interest in the conceptual history of Dutch landscape photography is presented here as an offering for artists and publishers interested in engaging with proven techniques of repetition and duration as they relate to the depiction of landscape. In a country like the Netherlands, so overbearingly man-made, such regimentation serves to reflect back to us the effects of our own imposition on landscape, something that can be applied much more generally speaking than just within the bounds of this small country on the North Sea.”

Admission to the book exhibition is free.

The book exhibition and Kaunas Art Book Fair 2024 is partially funded by Kaunas City Municipality, Lithuanian Council for Culture, UAB “Kopa”, “AON”.
