Exhibition “Arnold Newman: Masterclass” video tour with curator William A. Ewing

On December 15, 6 pm. a video tour of the exhibition Arnold Newman: Masterclass with curator William A. Ewing will premier on Kaunas Photography Gallery Facebook page. The presentation will be held in English and will be available on the gallery’s Facebook account after the premiere. 

William A. Ewing is a curator, author and former museum director who has specialized in photography since 1972.  His exhibitions have appeared at hundreds of museums worldwide, and his books have been translated into thirteen languages. Among museums are the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Serpentine , Whitechapel and Hayward Galleries, London; the and Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland; the Folkwang Museum, Essen; the Museo Nacional Reine Sofia, Madrid; the Setagaya Museum, Tokyo; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing;; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. His books include The BodyThe Face: the New PortraitureLandmark: the Fields of PhotographyCivilization: the Way We Live NowFlora Photographic,; and monographs on Edward Burtysnsky, Leonard Freed, Ray Metzker, Lynne Cohen, William Wegman and others. He is an Officer in the French Republic’s Order of Arts and Letters, and the recipient of the Royal Photographic Society’s Award for Outstanding Service to Photography.

Famous sitters range from painters, writers, and musicians to businessmen, bankers, and leaders of industry, and include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Marc Chagall, J.F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso, and Igor Stravinsky. Newman is often credited with being the first photographer to use so-called environmental portraiture, in which the photographer places the subject in a carefully controlled space of his choosing.

Arnold Newman (1918-2006) was one of the most productive, creative, and successful portrait photographers of the twentieth century.   For sixty-six years he applied himself to his art and craft, and was recognised by regular publication in the most influential magazines of the day, major solo exhibitions, and appearances in many of the world’s most prestigious photography collections.

Arnold Newman: MasterClass The exhibition was curated by William A. Ewing, former director of the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne.

This exhibition has been organised by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography (FEP), Minneapolis and Lausanne.
