The National Gallery of Art has opened a comprehensive retrospective of the work of photographer Virgilijus Šonta (1952–1992)—one of the most significant events in Lithuanian photography in recent years. The exhibition’s partner is Kaunas Photography Gallery, which consistently contributes to the revitalization, research, and dissemination of photographic heritage. This exhibition is the result of extensive research, archival work, and collaboration, aiming to present the legacy of one of Lithuania’s most prominent photographers in a fresh and comprehensive way. At the heart of the project is not only a retrospective exhibition but also a comprehensive album of Virgilijus Šonta’s photography, recently compiled and published, along with an accompanying exhibition catalog that serves as an important resource for both photography historians and the general public. The album was curated by Margarita Matulytė. Presentations of the publication are planned for late April.

Virgilijus Šonta stands out in the Lithuanian photography scene as an artist who defied established norms of image creation. His work has pushed the boundaries of photography, offering a unique perspective on people, the environment, and time, and today his works are becoming an increasingly significant reference point for new research on Lithuanian photography from the second half of the 20th century.

The newly published volume—a photography album of over 280 pages, prepared in Lithuanian and English—aims to present Virgilijus Šonta’s creative legacy, his artistic development, themes, cycles, and significance in the history of Lithuanian photography in as much detail as possible.

The exhibition is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. Sponsor: Exterus:Fundermax.

The publication of the album is supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture. Patron of Kaunas Photography Gallery: AON.
