This Wednesday (28 August) at 5.30 PM a lecture on the photography of Sakartveland will take place at the Kaunas Photography Gallery (Vilniaus g. 2).
The Night of Sakartvelo Photography in Šančiai will take place on the same evening at Servitutų str. 30, at 21.00.
The introduction to Sakartvelo photography in Kaunas will consist of 2 parts, which will aim to reveal the traditions of Sakartvelo photography, starting from the second half of the 19th century and ending with the dynamically emerging contemporary photographic scene.
The lecture will present 3 key periods in the history of photography in Sakartveld, including the golden age of the medium, coinciding with the very beginning of the development of photography in Sakartveld in the 1880s, the controversial Soviet period, with its dogmas and politically correct images, and the contemporary period, with a new generation of artists exploring the limits of the medium. The lecture will be given by Nestan Nijaradze, Director of the Tbilisi Museum of Photography and Media, who is visiting Kaunas for a photography residency. Thanks to more than a decade of cooperation between the Museum of Photography and other museums in Sakartveli, a number of Lithuanian photography exhibitions, education, night projections, lectures, and one of the largest collections of Lithuanian photography publications have been organised. The 2022 retrospective exhibition of 8 authors exhibited over 1,300 works of Lithuanian photography.
The preview programme will present 8 photographic projects by young photographers, as well as a special collection of photographs documenting the wave of mass protests against the so-called Russian law (the Foreign Agents Law) in the spring of 2024. The projection was prepared by the Tbilisi Museum of Photography and Media.
The event is free and open to all.
The event is organised by Kaunas Photography Gallery and Tbilisi Photography and Multimedia Museum.
