One of the most important stages of the future monograph has been completed – the entire archive of Violeta Bubelytė’s early photographs has been fully scanned. The images have been professionally edited, retouched, and prepared for printing, a complete book layout has been created, and test prints have been made.
The publication will be accompanied by four research and art history texts written specifically for this monograph by Adam Mazur, Gerardo Mosquera, Audra Baranauskaitė, and Monika Pakerytė. The texts analyze Bubelytė’s work in the contexts of contemporary photography, visual culture, and art theory, revealing her unique approach to self-portraiture, the representation of the body, and the role of the artist as model, director, and performer.
Violeta Bubelytė is a winner of the National Culture and Arts Prize and one of the most important Lithuanian photographers, without whose work it would be impossible to imagine the exhibition and institutional scene representing Lithuanian photography. Although her works are regularly presented in international contexts, until now there has been a lack of a monograph aimed at national and international audiences that systematically summarises the development of the artist’s work and its significance in the field of contemporary photography.
This publication aims to present Bubelytė’s work as a unique phenomenon not only in Lithuania but also in the broader context of European photography, to strengthen its visibility on the international art scene, and to become a long-term cultural and artistic asset. The book will be of interest to art critics, researchers, photography and visual arts professionals, the academic community, and a wider audience interested in contemporary art photography.
During the preparation of the book, Violeta Bubelytė opened up her creative kitchen to photography master’s students and young photographers, sharing not only her experiences but also her creative doubts, decisions, and methods.
The monograph is scheduled for release in the first half of 2026.
The preparation and publication of the book is partially funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture. The patron of Kaunas Photography Gallery is AON.
